Choose 'I'm a U.S. Business'
You'll see three options for business type. Select the one that applies to you.
- ●Click U.S. Business to proceed
- ●Government and International are for other entity types

Search for Your Business
Enter your business details to search the D&B database.
- ●Type your business name EXACTLY as it appears on your LLC or registration
- ●If you're a sole proprietor, type your personal name
- ●Enter your city and state, then click Search

Use the EXACT legal name from your LLC paperwork or registration — typos will cause D&B not to find your business.
If Found → Claim It
If D&B already has a record of your business, claim it to take ownership.
- ●Click Claim This Business
- ●Verify your business name, address, phone, and email
- ●D&B will confirm you're the authorized representative

If Not Found → Create It
If your business doesn't appear in the search results, you'll create a new listing.
- ●Click Create My Business
- ●Fill in: Legal Business Name, DBA (optional), Business Address
- ●Add Business Phone, Business Email, Business Type (LLC, Sole Proprietor, etc.)
- ●Number of Employees (you can put 1)

Tell D&B what industry your pilot car business operates in.
- ●Industry: Transportation / Support Activities
- ●Subcategory: Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle Services
- ●If that exact wording isn't available, choose Transportation Support Services
- ●Or: Other Transportation Services

If 'Pilot Car / Escort Vehicle Services' isn't listed as a subcategory, 'Transportation Support Services' or 'Other Transportation Services' will work fine.
Confirm Your Identity
D&B needs to verify that you're really you and authorized to represent this business.
- ●Verify your name, phone, and email
- ●D&B may send a verification code to your email or phone
- ●Enter the code to confirm your identity

Submit Your Application
Review everything one last time and submit your DUNS application.
- ●Review the summary page with all your entered information
- ●Make sure business name, address, and contact info are all correct
- ●Click Submit to complete your application

Wait for Your DUNS Number
After submission, D&B will process your application and issue your DUNS number.
- ●Free option: approximately 30 days for processing
- ●Paid option: 1–2 days for expedited processing
- ●You'll receive your DUNS number by email

If you need your DUNS number quickly (for a contract or fuel card application), the paid expedited option is worth it. Otherwise, the free 30-day option works fine.
- ✗Not searching for your business first — D&B may already have a record you can claim instead of creating a duplicate
- ✗Using a different business name than what's on your LLC paperwork — always match your legal registration exactly
- ✗Choosing the wrong industry category — make sure it's under Transportation, not something unrelated
- ✗Not following up after getting your DUNS — registering with credit bureaus and vendors is where the real value happens
